On my way to pick up a 1974 F-750. Price is so low i could scrap it and make my money back.No smoking or leaks.Has the 460. Organelle motor and trans manual 4 speed.
Im taking hydrolic bed off it.Part of me though sees a custom truck to move customers cars and trucks from auction.
My worries are the differential having to be replaced if i keep it.
A differential doesnt last 40 yrs does it?
My cousin is a pro body tech and could replace parts with viber glass make it lighter like fenders and grill for fun.
It gets 7miles per gallon. What engine and trans would be an up grade for this this beast.Would like to get 9-10 miles a gallon. What do you know about truck 40 yr old for that fact and engine and trans.thank you

The diff could be ok, biggest issue would be how long it sat and what humidity was - my 9" got rusty on the ring sitting 8 yrs. It still rolled but would've chewed up bearings had I driven it without cleaning things up.

Mileage improvement you got a couple things working against you -
1.Aerodynamic characteristics of a brick - keep it around 55 for best results
2. 3spd trans? Best case top gear is 1:1 Finding an overdrive (5spd or better yet 6spd) would help alot, keep the revs low and mileage will go up. Gearvendors used to make an add on overdrive.
3. 40 yr old fuel/spark technology. It's likely a points ignition, not the most efficient - could upgrade to Duraspark II fairly cheap but fuel will still be a carburetor. Gets the job done but EFI can beat it with efficiency/drivablility - especially with today's ethanolated fuel.
