Ultra Dog - you got engine pics?

Looking for pics of a 3000 internal engine parts (gas). I've seen you posted a shot of a gas piston, I was wondering if you (or anyone) had pics of the combustion chambers or cyls. or a torn down engine

Just something to tide me over until the wife let's me back in the barn to get this thing opened up.

I left the darned cat out again Saturday night and found this thing on my doorstep.
So you're in luck.
Actually, I got it home from Nebraska about noon yesterday and pulled the head off of it to look at the bores. Then I flooded the rings with 15w40 and greased the bores to preserve them as this tractor is going into storage. Your 3400 would be 4.2" instead of 4.4" but would look identical inside.
I will drop the pan someday to look at the bottom end if and when I find something to put it in.
It's another 4000 school tractor - gasser.

Thanks for the inspiration....

Yours looks a little different from mine. I don't have spiffy red valve springs and there's a big hole where no3's dish should be.

Wow!
That's quite a hole!
Can't quite see it here but it looks like it wrecked the head too?
What do your bores look like ie, how much ring ridge? Doesn't look like a lot from here. Did the piston damage hurt the bore?
What are your plans for it?
I have a few used 158 pistons here if you want one. I think they're standard. Could measure them up and pick the best one. Got a few rods too if you need one. Will just give you those if you want to pay shipping.
If you want to just patch it up...
Put new rings and rod bearings in it - probably run a long time.
Also have a head here that I would sell you cheap but it looks like you're in OH so shipping might be high.

It looks like the exhaust valve broke off and bounced around. You might be lucky that the piston was softer than the head.

It looks to me like the exh valve snapped and bounced around knocking valve and piston pieces into the intake tract where some bits got sucked into #2 and put a few dents in the piston.

Bores look great (nice and clean and smooth) but there is a ridge about 1" down in the bore - it's enough to easily feel. I didn't get a chance to mic it as fingers & toes were pretty cold and the wife said it was dinner time.

Will these run with big piston clearance? I don't mind if it smokes a bit but I don't want it failing on me in 5 yrs either.

Do these valves commonly separate (I'm assuming they're 2 piece).

Also, why the heck are the gas rebuild kits $250+ more than a diesel kit!? Part of me wants to buy a diesel kit and cut a deep dish on the lathe in each piston!

Anyone got a motor they want to ship to Ohio?

Rebuilt a 4000 gas 3 cyl this last spring, had the
same ridge as yours, about 1", due to how far
down on the piston the first ring is. I had a hard
time finding a ridge reamer that would cut
smoothly and uniform that far down. Three of
the ones that I have would not do it. I found one
online that I could order through O'Reillys, it
cuts the ridge from the bottom up, and it makes
a very smooth cut due to its ultra fine threads.
Just thought I'd share in case you happen to
have the same issue when you get to it. Ross

Ross, so you went with new oversize pistons? Where did you buys them from? Were you able to bore/hone it in the machine or did you pull the motor and have a shop do it?

I don't want to put lipstick on a pig, I just want a working machine.

I didn't have to put new pistons in it, they were
in very good shape. The guy I bought it from
had torn it apart because he said he couldn't
get it running good and was sure something
was wrong with the engine (carb) and when he
didn't find anything obvious, he either didn't
know what to do, or how to put it back together,
so he sold it after it sat around for 4/or 5/years.
When I got it, the head was off and valvetrain
was torn apart. Not knowing anything about it, I
pulled the pistons, checked the crank, installed
new rod and main bearings, checked over the
pistons and just re-rung them. Had the head
checked over, and needed new exhaust valves
(wore out), and had the seats ground and head
surfaced. There wasn't much ridge, but I won't
assemble an engine unless it is gone no matter
what. Problem with the other ridge reamers I
had was that they cut from the top down, and
wouldn't go deep enough to take the entire
length of the ridge down, so I was left with
about an 1/8" ring of the ridge 7/8 -1" down in
the cylinder. Everything worked out good, ran
great, brushogged with it and did chores with it
for a while before selling it.
