how to pull 3000 gas head

So I found I dropped the #3 exh valve (head snapped off).

To pull the head (68 industrial model) does the waterpump need to come off? There's so much grunge there that I can't tell if it attaches to the head and block or just overlaps the head.

I figure I'll have to stretch the front end as it's got the cast pan and the pistons'll likely need to come out.

I was hoping to leave it a roller while I inspect the engine internals.

I did one a couple summers back. Water pump doesn't have to be removed. The bracketry attached to the back of the engine has to be unbolted. On the pan, you need to disconnect the radius rods and use longer bolts to slide the front end forward. The wheels will turn inwards, but that's no problem. Keep the tractor jacked up under the bell-housing. You'll need a jack to
hold up and lower the pan. It's heavy!. You'll need some overhead lift to raise the head, it's heavy!.

Not hard to pull the head.
The water pump stays on the block when you pull it. Head with both manifolds weighs about 80 lbs so depending on how strong you are not a bad job to grab the manifolds and lift off by yourself. If the engine is still in the tractor it is a little awkward to set back on by yourself so I usually lay a couple of 1/2" thick pieces of scrap wood on top of the block when setting it back on so you don't thunk it down hard on the head gasket. Then lift the ends one at a time and pull the wood out.
Gasser has more crap to remove than a diesel. Makes you appreciate a diesel when doing stuff like that.

Thanks guys, manifolds are off (that's how I could see #3's exh valve wasn't in the port). I'm working on those stupid 5/8" head bolts sandwiched between the gas tank and the rear plate right now.

Water pump needs to come off if it is blue. If there is no paint leave it on. If it is still the original do it now instead of going back next month. Water pumps are a wear part.

Thanks Show, can I rebuild it or does it need replaced? Inspect and re-install? I'll likely add that to the parts order when I get the engine kit.

At some stores you can turn the old one in on the new one. They don't cost that much anyway.
