Ford 5000 power steering

Hi, I just bought a Ford 5000 (with loader) with a power steering issue. I've uploaded a photo hopefully. The casting in the bolster where the pin that holds the piston of the cylinder (under the radiator) seems to have broken away some time ago. Looks like a fix was made but that pin broke also. Would it be possible to run a new pin through to the bottom of the bolster to hold the piston? Also does anyone know what the hose clamp on top of the cylinder is doing? Thanks for any help!

I've seen those castings break out before like that, most likely due to excessive slop in the rest of the assembly. However you can manage to anchor that pin should be just fine, as long as it's stout. As for the hose clamp, I can't really tell from that angle. It's certainly not factory.

Thanks Bern, will look for a stronger pin. By slop do you mean the actuating arm adjustments?
I'll get a better photo of the hose clamp, but it seems to be holding something down on the actuating arm pin.

By slop, I mean the collective end play of all of the parts that would normally have minimal clearance, notably, the pin bushing on the other side of the cylinder, and the main pivot bushing of the steering control arm. When these areas get sloppy, back and forth movement of the cylinder starts acting like a big hammer, which is most likely what caused your anchor pin to break. Either that, or some very strong external force (front wheels falling into a deep hole at an awkward angle) could have also caused this I suppose.

Great, thanks Bern. Will get the front end up and see if I can feel any slop.

Here is a close up of the hose clamps in case you have any ideas about them.

It would appear that someone engineered some special pins with tabs on the heads that would keep the pins from rotating in the bores, presumably to reduce pin bore wear. The hose clamps are simply crude retainers for the tabs.

Might be a good idea that needs a little refinement.

Thanks Ultradog and Bern, great to know. presumably those pins can still be pulled from the top.
One of the front wheels is leaning out vertically, haven't pulled it off yet to see what is going on. But you could be right Bern about something happening there that could have broken the cylinder pin.
Thanks so much for the insights!
