12 volt conversion

I have a 196? 4cyl 2000. I am going to convert it to 12 volts. I know I need a generator and battery. If I use a regular 12 volt car coil, Do I have to get special points or condenser? Also, how do I wire the idiot light? can that take the place of the diode that keeps the engine from running when the key is off?

you COULD keep your genny and just have it rebuilt for 12v with a new regulator as well.

or you can go get that battery and alternator.

i reccomend a napa ic14sb coil. it's about 16$

no change to points or condensor.

get new lamps.

if your lamp works, you can wire it as follows for a 3 wire alternator setup.

wire from coil side of key to lamp, then to #1 on alternator.

key on= lamp on, start engine and get to about 400 rpm and lamp should go out and you should be charging.

#2 on the alt should just jump to the charge stud.

I would switch it to a alternator less trouble in the long run and many you can buy have a life time warranty on them so if they go bad you can replace it for free. Points is point they do not care if it is 6 or 12 volts. Also on an alternator it is easy to use the idiot light
