FORD 3000 Hydraulic help

Symptoms:
1. Very slow warmup. Can take 20-30 minutes of running for hyd fluid to start flowing out of the pump.
2. Lots of air in the system. I installed a valve on the pump and open it to bleed out the air. Once the fluid starts to flow, air can shoot out or it may just bubble out. This happens when I shut engine down for > 30 minutes
3. Once fluid is flowing and air bled, lift works just fine. Lifts at least 800 lbs at a decent rate.

Ideas? Thanks in advance.

That tractor should have the old style hydraulic lines which are made together and attach on both ends with a flange and three bolts.
I think they are the most reliable. But they can still get banged up and damaged, rusted or the bolts or seals under the flanges get loose.
The first thing I would do is pull your lines off and and inspect everything. Make certain you don't have a pinhole or crack in the suction line somewhere. Then I would buy new seals for both ends and reinstall it and see what that does.

The connections and gaskets look pretty solid. Almost seems related to the hyd oil temp. Once it's warm enough, it can flow and build pressure. I'm wondering if the pump is tired and needs a rebuild. Maybe then it will be strong enough to push the cold fluid. Thanks UD.

Sounds like 2 problems.

1. Fluid needs to warm up before it flows good in the cold. What kind of fluid are you running?

2. Air in system after 30 minutes of not running. Definitely a leak somewhere. Might be pinholes in the suction tube under the top cover, or the o-ring for the pickup tube has seen better days.

The standard UTF (134D I think). OK, I will look a little more for leaks since both of you are saying the same thing. Thanks.

What kind of temperatures are you experiencing? Needing to warm up also might be water in the fluid partially freezing and restricting flow until it warms up, but that still wouldn't be contributing to the air in the system.
