Wondering if anyone has had issues with excessive heat at the exhaust manifold and muffler (horizontal configuration). Gas tank is above the manifold and muffler. Could a bad muffler cause this?I am thinking of changing to a vertical stack with or without a muffle. Any advice?

Do you have a heat shield between the gas tank and muffler? You may have an exhaust leak. Back side of muffler or gasket where the neck bolt to the manifold, or a cracked manifold. They are bad for cracking.

Thanks for quick reply. I do have a heat shield. I will check the manifold for cracks and gasket cracks. I became concerned when I saw the back half my muffler was glowing Cherry red. Only the back half of the muffler was Cherry red the front half looked normal. I am wondering if there could be some kind of blockage within the muffler. My Concern is the excess heat causing a fire hazard. Has anyone else had this issue with a series 4000 or any other similar tractors?

No, just starting and warming up to face a -2 degree evening and The first plowable snow in SE Michigan of 2015. I reasently did a tune up so it is possibly the timing is off. I am not a great mechanic, just enough to get in trouble.

The ignition timing is retarded and/or the centrifugal advance is not functioning properly.

like said, badly retarded timing will do it.
Lean will also make hot, but that lean and the engine would stumble very badly when given throttle.
With these exact symptoms and -2 degrees......also make sure your muffler wasn't full of water which will now be ice....
