3000 Diesel

Looking at a 3000, 3cyl. diesel. Fair tires, straight sheet metal, lift leaks down with a load. Engine runs well, has a good bit of blow by and a little noisy. I know it would be a great improvement over my 841 and 9N/8N's. Live PTO,Hi/Lo transmission,Diff. lock and such. I can get it for $2000. What should I be on the lookout for? I have been around the tractor for several years and have used it to bush hog occasionally. The present owner bought a green Yanmar with a loader to till his garden and such. What do ya'll think?

$2000 for a diesel 3000? You should just go scoop that up and if you aren't happy with it, list it for $3000 and make a few bucks.

Mine has a pretty good leak at the rear main....not sure if they all will eventually have this. Otherwise, does not owe me a thing and I paid a lot more years ago.

its the blowby that bothers me. If excessive, you could be out 3800 bucks for a rebuilt engine.

there are lots of good tractors out there for 300 bucks more..
than a tractor that needs a 3800 dollar fix.

how quickly does it start cold? what repairs does it need? tires can put you back 700 bucks.

Yup, I paid 2900$ for a non Ps diesel, that needed brakes, steering bearings, and pro assy re bearings and seal
.

Blow by and noisy, The blow by could end up costing you a lot if you can not do the repairs yourself. The noisy part may just be diesel, they dont give a lot of bottom end trouble.Does it crank with out ether The injection pump cost about $600 if it is bad

Pulled the trigger today. I do my own work so parts and any required machine work will be the only out of pocket expense.

Engine overhaul is $1500 and you do all but the machine work/replacement parts on the block and head. Rest of it is just time and not all that much money. My ' 65 came with what appeared to be an OEM distributor type RoosaMaster pump, not the inline Simms even though the repair manual said that they only came with Simms.

Good solid tractor and once you get the bugs out of it should give you lots of years of trouble free service.

Tractor prices vary greatly as a function of geographical area. Down here they are pretty cheap. Up in the midwest the current owners are "extremely proud" of their antiques.

3000 diesels had either the Simms inline pump or the CAV rotary pump. None had a RoosaMaster as far as I am aware. Not sure why they kept switching back and forth between the Simms and CAV pumps during the 3000 production run, but the parts site shows the dates of the switches:

CAV: (65/12-65 & 9-69 & 1-71/)
Simms: (1-66/8-69 & 1-70/12-70)

Not sure about October through December of '69 though, as that date range isn't listed for either. I'm guessing that they were having availability problems with both so they might have actually not made any diesel 3000's during that time.

Here are a few within 250 miles of Dallas.

You are correct sir. I was sitting here trying to remember the pump
type, forgetting CAV which it has, and remembered the pump brand
on my 63 2000. I did remember that it was not a Simms inline.

Sorry for the disinformation.
