Transmission and Rear Axle Common Sump?

On a Ford 5000/6600 or similar....is the
transmission and rear axle all one common sump?
i.e. when you fill with oil/check oil can the oil
get from the rear axle to the transmission and vise
versa? What about 4000/4600 or similar.

Transmission and rear end are seperate boxes with different fill points and level checks on all the models you listed.
They do use the same oil however.

Never say always or never.... There are some of those that DO have a common sump. AFAIK, any of them with Dual Power have the common sump. If course, none of the 3-cylinder models have DP.

Fordfamer is correct. Anything with Dual Power has to be common sump, and that would include 5000/6600 models.

Also, most 4-cylinder x600 series are, DP or not, but not all.

And since nobody mentioned it, sometimes the ones that are supposed to be separate have aged into being a bit more familiar with each other than they are supposed to be - which is fine(-ish) if they are both running 134D, unless you really want to tear the thing apart to redo all the seals.

like to add that if you have the dipstick in the trans cover...
make sure it is still straight.
When I got my 5000, it must have been bent some and a gear had worn a big crescent into the stick.
It was just a whisper from coming in two and dropping in there.
which would have been....bad
I made up something else to check the level and pulled it out of the cap.
It also pulled out of the cap much too easily in my opinion.

All three cylinder chassis tractors such as the 4600 have separate sumps for the transmission and rear axle/hydraulics.
The 6600 and other 4 cylinder tractors of it's generation are common sump. The 5000 for most of it's life was a separate sump for transmission and rear axle/hydraulics... but as previously noted, the dual power models are common sump. There's also been some anecdotal evidence here in the past that 5000's built in 1975 are also common sump, IIRC. My advice to you, if you have a 5000... is take nothing for granted until you check and verify exactly what it has. I have a '66 5000 and it has separate sumps...

Rod,

I do believe early 5600s without DP could have been separate sump. I seem to recall seeing one, as well as reading a service bulletin about that. I'd have to dig it out to be positive though.

That could be... I think that would go back to the comment about assuming nothing when it comes to stuff like that with Ford... I'd say if someone found an old transmission in the back of the warehouse that had the seals in it... it got used whether it was for a 5000 or 5600.
