can one of you ford expert fellows tell me the shift pattern for a 1960 821 gas engine tractor, ser# 110004 if that helps. i just bought it today and i'm having some trouble figuring this thing out. specifically where 1st gear and reverse are and exactly how many gears this tractor has.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe that the 821 actually had the 5 speed transmission, but it might have had the 4 speed.

If it has the 5 speed, then the whole shifter raises up and down between 3 different height levels, and the shift pattern is forward and rearward at each of the 3 different height levels. Top level is 3rd in the forward position and Reverse in the rearward position,. Next level down is 2nd in the forward position and 1st in the rearward position, and all the way down is 4th in the forward position and 5th in the rearward position.

If it has the 4 speed transmission, then it is a semi-standard "H plus R" pattern like this:

R 4 1
  | | |
------

   2 3

A 821 has a 5 speed trans.
5 forward and 1 reverse

Push the shifter all the way down and pull to you 5th
Push the shifter all the way down and push away from you 4th
Push the shifter half way down and pull to you 1st
Push the shifter half way down and push away from you 2nd
Shifter all the way up and pull to you reverse
Shifter all the way up and push away from you 3rd

my shifter doesn't look like the one in the picture. it is a long shifter coming straight uo out of the trans. it doesn't rotate sideways. i do have an owners manual coming for it but it wont be here until next wednesday. any idea of what trans it has in it?

It should be the 4 speed.

The 5 speed was only in the x5x and x6x model tractors as far
as I know.

Your x2x should be the 4 speed.

A x2x might be a very limited machine, lacking 3 point and
other stuff?

(quoted from post at 17:08:16 01/15/15) thank you guys. i appreciate the help. is this trans referred to as the sherman?

No, the Sherman is an auxiliary transmission that replaces the input shaft into the 4 speed only (not available with the 5 speed). There was a Sherman Underdrive, an Overdrive and a combination Under/Overdrive. With the Sherman combo you had 12 forward speeds and 3 reverse speeds. The shifter for the Sherman came out of the transmission bellhousing on the left side just forward of the runningboard.

If you have the 4 speed transmission, then you might have a Sherman Auxiliary transmission, but the shifter handle for the Sherman would be on the left side of the transmission bell housing, not on top where the main shifter is.
