Tiller and 4000

If you don't have a low range , not a Sherman step
down but a true low range tiller will be travelling
to fast to do a good job, but a 4000 should have
plenty of power for a 6' tiller that one is 55" , it
shouldn't know it is behind it.

What transmission does your 4 cylinder 4000 have?

4 speed - Definitely too fast in first, even with a Sherman because the Sherman slows down the input to the transmission and therefore slows down the PTO as well, so you have to crank up the rpm's to compensate to get proper PTO rpm, and then the ground speed ends up being the same "too fast" speed.

5 speed - tolerable in soft ground, but in anything where the tiller needs to work you will wear your leg out holding the clutch pedal halfway down for the live PTO to do the work before you can let the clutch up enough to inch forward and then hold it halfway down again.

Select-O-Speed - perfect match.

A 5 speed like what as in the 861/851 which is like what you have is just and I do mean jsut slow enough to use that. Price wise it is ball park if it is in good shape

Looks like a good rig, side shift will cut out your
tire track.

If you buy the tiller, "BE sure" it has a soft sheer
pin in the pto shaft.

The tiller I used had a slip clutch disc, if you hit
a rock or piece of metal the tiller will hang up
much faster that a plow or disc.

You want that pto shaft to slip or pin to sheer and
not tear up a pto shaft or gearbox.

Tillers do a great job.

I have used one with my 850. If you want a perfect seed bed in one
pass, forget it. If you can deal with making 2 passes like you need
to do with a walk behind tiller, it will be fine.

as some said.

make a few passes, it liekly won't do it in 1 pass unless the soil is very cooperative.
