Ford 8N White Smoke

I am inquiring for a friend who is not on the list. he has a 1948 Ford 8N. Recently it started showing white smoke out of the exhaust. He thought maybe a head gasket leaking and getting antifreeze into one of the pistons. He had the head removed, checked, and the head gasket replaced. He got it back from the mechanic recently. It will start, run awhile, blow white smoke, and then die. Then afterwhile he can start it again, and it will repeat what it did before. Any ideas as to what is wrong?

cracked head, cracked block, warped head/block, bad head gasket come to mind.. is it blowing bubbles out the radiator when fill all the way to the neck? what do the plugs look like, and which ones? Compression check? hot and cold?

Run it a few minutes from cold with NO water.. does it still do it? be sure to drain the block.

Sounds like the guy who fixed it did not re-torque the head so it warms up and then leaks a bit if coolant into the cylinder which in turn kill the engine

Thanks, I talked with my friend this afternoon. I ran the tractor some more and it seemed to be fine. The test will be when he works for a few hours sometime. Could have been some coolant left in the system somewhere and it had to burn off.

Thanks much. He tried it this afternoon and ran fine. So maybe just some residue of antifreeze somewhere. Time will tell.

Any coolant in the cylinders would have burned off in 5 minutes or less so not likely to be the problem
