I have the above mentioned tractor. The steering was converted to a lever hydraulic valve; I would like to return it to the original steering wheel. Any help. This tractor did not have the cable version of steering. Thanks

Good to see you made it over the the Ford board.
The question is, how much is left of your original steering column?
All of it? None of it?
The photos are of the column that was in the newer (non cable actuated) 4000 industrials.

My tractor doesn't look anything like the pic's. No gear box or pitman arm. just a small hydraulic assemble with a steering shaft. I will try and get a pic if that is more helpful.

I am not sure how to attach a pic.

Thanks

I can try to get you some photos off my HD. Do you
have a steering wheel/column or is it hand levers?
you can send me some photos.

I'm not sure on all of them, but on all of the Fords that I have seen that were converted to forklifts, the seat was reversed and the steering wheel/column was on what was originally the rear of the tractor instead of on top of the bell housing like it was when it left the factory, like in Kirk's picture. I may be wrong, but I don't think that they used the original steering column when they made the forklift conversion either.

In any case, if you have some sort of column or rod that your handle/lever is attached to, you may be able to find a steering wheel that could be mated up to the rod/shaft that the handle/lever is currently attached to. If you can't find anything like that, then since it already has fully hydraulic steering, you might consider a steering column from one of the later industrial models that had fully hydraulic steering like the 340 or 445 or anything later. The newer ones should be easier to find at salvage yards.

Here are a couple of photos of mine. At the bottom
of the column there are four hydraulic line. Two go
to the pump and two go to the cylinders.

The other two lines on the column go to the cylinders. There is one cylinder on each side. There is no steering rod that comes from the steering column like the standard HD.

I am taking the steering shaft/ box out right now; hopefully I will have more pictures tomorrow; thanks for all the great replies & pics.

Hello Sean , The Ford 4000 HD Industrial Fork lifts are Ford Factory built units from late 1959 to 1963 with parts from Marshall Fork Lift Company in 1964 Ford supplied Marshall the Ford Drivetrain and they continued building them . Just like the pictures Kirk has posted . Thanks Tony

Hello Reed , Sorry but you are wrong your Forklift is a Cable Steer tractor that's why it was converted to the lever type valve , quick and easy just not very practical . Thanks Tony
