3400 gas common problems?

So I'm getting ready to help a friend with his tractor - been sitting at his grandfathers farm the last 2 yrs (original owner) and it's turning over but not starting. I haven't looked at it yet and he's no mechanic so I'm going to start with the ign, checking for spark and then seeing if it'll fire on ether, telling me it needs a carb clean.

Are these common to drop a valve or anything like that? I know my uncle's 5000 needed a head but it was a diesel.

We don't know why grandpa parked it..... Could the trans be bad? hydraulics common to go?

No.

Once verifying good ignition, check for fuel at the carb.

They're pretty basic - spark, fuel, air.
There are no less than 3, sometimes 4 fuel filters on those.
One above the fuel shutoff inside the tank, one in the top of the fuel pump on the timing cover behind the fan, another in the sediment bowl behind the carb and sometimes but not always in the brass fitting where the fuel line enters the carb.
Points are a PIA.
To get at them, pull all 4 wires off the dist cap and up and out of the manifold. Then remove the cap and dust cover. Point gap = .025
Very easy to retime.
Firing order is 1,2,3. Distributer turns counter clockwise. #1 is marked on the cap.
They are very good tractors but the Holley carb was not their strong point.
 
I don't imagine the points can be more difficult than on a 2N with a loader....

What about transmission or hydraulics - any issues to watch for there?
 
Could have a stuck clutch which is not uncommon.
Most common transmission on those was a 6X4 which was bullet proof. See photo.
Might or might not have hydraulics or 3 point.
Likely came with a loader.
It's essentially a 3000 with a heavy non-adjustable front axle. Second photo.
