Replacong cam follower pin

I'm finally fixing to replace the cam follower pin on my Ford 851 I purchased the I&T FO-20 shop manual tonight and have scanned through it, any tips would be greatly appreciated, also the gauges used to adjust draft linkage I don't have the gauge , I do have feeler gauges for points can I use those and if so what thickness should I use and any suggestions for holding the lift arms up would be helpful, Sound Guy I know you'll respond and as always I appreciate your advice and everyone else that responds

O-20 gives 'alternate' adjusting instructions 'without special tools' and there you will find the dimensions (much thicker than feeler gauges for points).

You can make the gauges out of a piece of wood. Just cut and sand to the size in the I&T manual. They don't need to be very large, about 3/4" X 1" X thickness. My guess is that you will not need to adjust anything - that is unless someone in past played with the adjustments.

When I replaced the cam follower pin on my Jubilee, all the control levers were a bucket of rust. Everything was worn so bad, cam included, I couldn't get it in adjustment. So I turned out a can follower pin on the lath out of a 1/2 inch bolt, the other end was the size of the cam pin.

If I ever take my lift cover off again for the 5th time, I'll try to figure out how to tighten up all the egg shaped parts on all the control lever pins. I'm thinking of making the holes round again and then press in a brass bushing the correct inside diameter.

Agreed, William.

I've never worked on one that did not require adjustment after replacing the cam follower pin.

The last two I worked on did not require adjustment. But the linkage was in good shape and the cam follower pins were like new. I pulled the top cover to fix leaks, not adjustment issues. I got lucky I guess.

The Fords down here in Va must all be worn out as every one that I have had the cover off needed to be adjusted. position control is about .450 and draft about .395 you can make a nifty one out of 1/2 in key stock. drill about a 5/16 hole in it and cut it into in the middle of the hole. You can then grind the end to the correct thickness.
