Just picked-up this tractor, 3cyl gas,8 speed trans with live pto. I can push the clutch down all the way, but pto does not stop. Can I adjust the pto clutch or will I need to split the tractor. I ordered a manual for it, didn't get it yet!

What year is it?
The very early 3 cyl tractors still had the 2 hole clevis on the clutch rod so the pto and drive disengaged at the same time.
You might check that.

Moving the pin to the other hole in the clevis will not make the transmission and PTO clutch disengage at the same time. It lowers the clutch pedal so there is less travel for doing loader work for example and it will not disengage the PTO clutch. If it is in the correct hole and the free play is set correctly and it doesn't disengage the PTO then it will need to be split to adjust or rebuild the clutch and pressure plate assembly.

My 1963 Ford 4000 5-speed had the same issue last year. The maintenance section of my owner's manual had a section on clutch pedal adjustment. After making the adjustments, the problem was resolved.

Once you get your manual you can determine if there are any necessary adjustments you can make.

Good luck.

When you push the clutch pedal down can you feel where it has additional pressure for the second stage? It should be about half way down. If you can feel it you could have a stuck PTO clutch disc. If not you will need to split the tractor. The combination of main clutch disc wear and linkage wear on the pressure plate cause more travel for the main clutch to work so there isn't enough travel left to disengage the PTO clutch. I have in the past adjusted all the free play out of the clutch to give it more travel to see if the PTO clutch will work. This is just done as a test and you don't want to run it without any free play.

Hi Mike,

I see just about every time you post on this forum, you always upload some great old photos or pages from Ford tractor literature. Do you have a large Ford literature collection? It seems you have uploaded some harder to find stuff, so I'm just curious. Thanks

Hello John,

It is not much of a collection, just an owner's
manual and 24 page brochure which my dad
obtained when he purchased our family tractor
back in the early 1970's.

I will see if I can find an appropriate
location to upload the entire brochure and let
you and the other members know where it is
located.
