I am looking at a 4000 with a SOS trans, the pto on the 540 side turns all the time but not real hard until en gauged. is the a huge problem, or maybe an adjustment. There is no one left at the dealership that I work at that knows anything much about the SOS and the ones that are there dont like them much lol
Thanks Boss

I used to run a PTO post digger on my 4000. As i recall the auger would turn slightly anytime it was not touching the ground.

never hurt anything. I haven't used the PTO in 9 years. I have a cap on it now can't say if it still turns when not engaged.

The S-O-S transmission used in the 4 cylinder 400 and earlier tractors is not equipped with a PTO brake.

It is normal for the PTO to turn when the engine is running and the PTO is not engaged.

Only if you cannot stop it with your boot when the oil is up to temperature it there any indication that something is amiss.

As others have said it is normal. I keep a cover over my shaft when not in use because constant turning in the dust is hard on the seal, and mine is a worker.

But use a 2x4, not your boot, especially if your foot is in it! My 671 will stop by itself when warmed up good...little I use it this time of year in MN, it ain't gonna stop (by itself) now! Sometimes I can't hook up the 'nure spreader till I get out to the field.

Hello Boss , If the 4000 you are looking has the trans. with the C3NN7006B casting number of the left side it is the newer Direct Drive Trans. which is the better one , it was originally installed from mid 1962 - 1965 and in earlier tractors for warranty problems . As others have said you should be able to stop the pto shaft with your boot because it has no brake . There is no adjustment to stop the shaft but if you look in the service manual there is a cable adjustment for proper engagement and disengagement which will affect how hard the shaft will turn(no load) when in the disengaged position . Thanks Tony
