1957 640 Split Questions???

I am helping a friend who owns a 1957 640 that has a bad clutch. Our family run all Farmall and IH equipment, and I have split a few of these in my time but have never worked on a Ford. The 640 has a Ford loader on it Serial # 5236 and on the left side of tag it has 19-97, my question is, is there any tricks to splitting this tractor, or just like splitting the basic tractor? Thank you for your time and help on this....Happy Holidays..Binderman

Nothing special to watch for.
Make sure linkage, wiring etc. are separated.
Watch out when taking the radius rods loose they can pop up. Putting a jack up front will prevent this.
When taking the hydraulic loose at the split, expect several quarts of oil to come out.
I tipped my catch container over and made a mess the last time I split my 640.

It is easiest in the long run to remove the loader. Be sure the tractor is level front to back before starting or it will be difficult to roll it back together. Put a level along the bottom of the block. Be safe? don't support either end with a jack. Crib under the front after driving wooden wedges in between the front axle and the bolster. remove the left running board and the round cover that the PTO control lever is in. Bolt a trailer jack to three of the cover holes via a fabricated bracket ala Hobo NC. supporting it this way you can roll it around safely as much as you wish. The rear rolls more easily because you get leverage pushing on the large tires. While apart replace the clutch release bearing, transmission input seal and bearing, and the freeze plug at the rear of the motor.

Thank you everyone for the help, it is pretty much like I figured it would be, it's always best to ask the people who know, Thanks again...Binderman

I put a clutch in my 640 last year. You don't have to take the loader off, although it's easier with it off. Just disconnect the loader at the axle brackets, support the loader with blocking or jack stands, disconnect the battery box and steering box and hang to whole thing with hood attached off a ceiling beam or tree limb or you might be able to hang it of the top of the loader frame, supporting engine with blocks rolling hydraulic jack disconnect the tranny at bellhousing and roll the back half of the tractor away.

Hello , I just joined up . I recently bought a ford , I think its considered an NAA . The only numbers I can find are by the starter . They are 640 with the numbers 5098 below that. The 5098 has a diamond on each side . Is this considered a NAA or a 640 , and what manuals do I need ? Any help will be much appreciated . Thanks

Joe,

Welcome. You really should start you own thread to ask a new question rather than adding to another thread.

Those numbers indicate that it is a 640, but the numbers are just stamped into the transmission housing, so if the transmission was ever swapped it could have started life as some other model and if that is the case you'll never know for sure what it was originally because the original numbers were on the original transmission.

5098 is a fairly low serial number which means that the tractor that the transmission left the factory on was made in late 1954. That was early enough that the transmission would probably have swapped right into an NAA, so it is possible that it is an NAA that has had the transmission swapped.

Post some pictures of the tractor from a few different angles, and a close up of the badge on the front of the tractor above the grill, and we should be able to help you figure out what it is. Or at least tell us what the badge looks like and if it says anything on it.

sorry sean , I didnt know about starting new thread .I will post pictures soon . I think its original transmission .I just want to make sure I get the correct service and parts manuals .
