5000 SOS hard starting

My 65 5000 is real hard to start the first time
in the day. Takes a lot of cranking, and blows
white smoke out the stack. After I get it
started once it will start right up the rest of
the day. I have not checked compression yet.
This is a rebuild I did this past spring, and
I'm not sure what I did wrong. I used standard
rings...would oversized rings make a
difference?

My tractor blows white smoke and won't start in cold weather, yet it starts and runs well otherwise. The white smoke is unburned diesel. Does your thermostart work? If so, heat it up for 30-60 seconds or so and see if it starts.

Is your starter cranking speed slow? This can also be a problem as you loose too much compression with slow cranking, and the engine won't kick off.

If you just replaced the rings, they may not have seated. Did you hone the cylinder walls??

You said you put rings in it. And you are asking about the size of
the rings.Did you check the bore? You may need a bore job, and
larger pistons and rings.

White is water, black is raw fuel, blue is oil. Not uncommon to have white smoke initially on startup in the winter especially in the northern climates. The white lasts until the cylinders get hot enough to burn off the condensed water vapor.

If you had a clogged injector you would be belching black smoke.

If your rings haven't seated or were the wrong size then it would be blue, or a combination of any of the 3 due to circumstances with that engine.

Look in your Ford service manual for what I just said!
