Ford 5000 engine miss

I have found a Ford 5000 wth loader but it has the selecto
speed transmission but it has been rebuilt and works great.
Now the down side the engine has a miss. I have not heard it
but a buddy has. He drove it and everything worked . It even
has newer rear tires. I can buy it $1500 about 300 miles away.
What could be the miss .? My buddy said there is no smoke.
But they had to use a little starting fluid to get it to crank.

Several possibilities. Misadjusted or burned valves, bad injector, injection pump problems, broken rings. .. I bought a 5000 with a miss a few years ago. Turned out to be just a bent pushrod.
If you decide not to buy it, tell me where it is. :) A non-runner will bring that much around here.

You need to try to estimate the over-all health of the motor. If it makes little smoke and blowby when running, and most indications are positive, then something as simple as a bad injector are likely. If indications are that the motor is old, then it could be that the others will soon be missing as well.

Could be any number of things, but one of the first things I'd look for is a broken plunger return spring in the injection pump. I say this because you say there is no smoke. If you have a dead hole with no smoke, it means no fuel is getting into the cylinder.

Everyone who has replied is assuming that it's a diesel engine, but you never actually said, is it gas or diesel? Just covering all the bases here.

I had the same problem with my 6610 and inline pump that Bern talked about, the springs were bad in the injector pump.
