Ford 300 cold starting

Just got a 68 Ford 3000 gas this year. It requires choke and has to crank awhile even when warm. In the cold it floods right away with choke. I really can only start it with fluid below 30F. The tractor runs great once it starts and warms up just fine. Haven't looked at the carb or anything yet, but I know that the choke is closing. Any ideas?

The carburetors on the 3 cyl gas engines are cold natured and do flood easily The distributors are sometimes problematic also. make sure every thing in the ignition system is in tune before tearing into that Holley carb.

My 3 cylinder 4000 gasser requires some choke unless it is up to operating temperature and the air is warmer than 70 degrees or so, but the amount of choke required varies with the temperature of the air and the engine. It is easy to flood it if you use too much choke.

If the engine is cold and it's below 80 degrees out I use full choke. If it's above 80 degrees out or if the engine has already been running, then I turn the key with my left hand while slowly pulling out on the choke knob with my right hand until it starts. I always push the choke back in halfway as soon as it starts and leave it there for 2 to 10 minutes while it warms up depending on how cold things are.
