im looking at a 9600 the dual power slips in low how expensive are they to rebuild? Also steering box has a lot of slop what usually happens there? its cheap SO I don't mind doing some work to it. thanks

Usually when they slip, it's in high range, not low range. Check your pressures carefully before you take it apart.

I haven't priced parts lately - everything from NH is high. You might wish to price clutch plates (frictions and steels), a seal & gasket kit, and the rear housing sleeve as a start. Those are the major pieces you'll need, short of any hard part failures.

I don't have much to add, except Bern's right - as usual.

I had a 9600 for 10 years. Wish I still had it. For what it's worth, I had my dual power rebuilt in my TW35 this Spring. Took it out and tore it down myself, and had NH rebuild it. Spent $1850. Splitting a 9600 to get the dual power out is relatively simple if it doesn't have a cab.

As for steering, not sure. Could be the steering motor going bad.

You might ask the owner if he's kept coolant conditioner in the engine and kept the antifreeze changed. Cavitation is a problem with these 401's; as is the water jacket getting a little thin if the coolant isn't changed for a few decades. Ran into that w/my 8700. Also remove the drain plug from the injection pump and see if oil runs out or just diesel. Oil has to be changed in these every time the engine oil is changed because the pump doesn't feed off the engine sump. If only diesel runs out, that's a bad sign.

This 9600 will be a strong, dependable tractor if you put some work and money into it. If it's cheap enough, buy it. These old Fords aren't too hard to work on. Good luck.

I agree that splitting a 9600 is not difficult, and rebuilding a DP is not difficult either. You don't need to spend top dollar for parts, as there are other sources such as Madison Tractor. I did mine without any special tools either. If there is not corresponding movement of the plate under the steering cylinder when you move the steering wheel there is a likelihood of the steering motor going bad. they are EXPENSIVE!
