841 dropping 3 point hitch

Hooked a disk to my latest purchase. An 841 Ford. Raised the disk up all the way only to have it clear the ground by a bare few inches. Lowered the disk and raised it again. This time it raised up six to eight inches and then immediately let back down to the ground. Now pulling the leaver raises the disk but as soon as it reaches full up, it (the disk) immediately and quickly goes back down all the way. Also, the lift lever has been taken out of the track and must be pulled back at least four inches past the rear of it before the arms will lift. Without any implement attached the arms will lift up but have a slight up-down surge. The fluid level is ok.
Any ideas as to cause?

With that much out of range motion on the quadrant I'd be pulling the top cover, at a minimum I bet it has a badly worm cam pin and possibly cam, might find some linkages needing repair too, then adjustment after repair. Gasket and oring kit plus the pin go for about 16$ added up

Ps you didn't me too if the lift handle moved when released, that's a seperate problem, but can be addressed at same time.

Also, check between draft and position

My thoughts,

You have two problems.

1. Your linkage is out of adjustment or the cam follower pin is worn. Raising it to the top of the quadrant and not getting a full lift is the clue.

2. When you raise and then the load drops, you have a leak some place. Most likely the piston o-ring.

I would pull the top cover, check the cam follower pin and replace if worn, adjust the linkage per the I&T manual, and replace the the piston o-ring and back up washer.

While you have the top cover off, make sure the unloader valve is free. If not pull it, clean it up and install a new o-ring.
