Ford 3600 transmission hole?

I just got a 76' 3600 diesel. It has the 4sp high/low trans. I just noticed a hole in the bottom of the trans. It's about a 1/8" hole about a foot in front of the drain plug. There is a cotter pin sticking out of it with the legs folded over. Of course there is trans oil dripping out of this hole.
Anybody know what this would be for and if it should be there?

There for a reason. Leave it and make sure it wiggles. It's to let
oil out of the bell housing in case of a rear main seal leak on
engine or an input shaft seal leak on transmission. How bad is
the leak? And are you sure it is trans lube? If it leaks with that
hole plugged, the clutch would get wet and would slip. Cotter
key keeps hole from plugging. It came from factory with it.

As RESLLS says, that hole is at the bottom of the bell housing, which is where the clutch is located, and that area is supposed to be dry. If the rear seal on the engine or the front seal on the transmission leak, then there will be either engine oil or transmission oil in the bell housing. The hole is to let any oil that makes its way into the bell housing drip out to avoid getting oil on the clutch, and the cotter pin is there to rattle around with the normal vibrations of the tractor to keep the hole from getting clogged with any dirt or mud that might splash up on it from below so that the oil can drip out. If it is a very slow leak then you can probably live with it for a while. Keep an eye on things and make sure that the cotter pin stays loose so that it can rattle around, and keep an eye on the engine and transmission oil levels to see how fast either of them are dropping and keep them topped off. It's your call on when you want to split the tractor to deal with the leak, but it will need to be done eventually.

Thanks guys!
I knew someone would know what I was talking about. I didn't realize the bell housing was that long until you pointed it out. Thanks again
