1968 Ford 201 Engine

Need help. My 68 Ford 4000, 3 cylinder diesel started knocking from a connecting rod. Loud knock! Imbalance. Loss of Power. Still firing on all three. The engine still starts right up and has always run good, been serviced well. I need it to move hay. This is my loader tractor and I don't have a lot of time to waste fiddling with fixing the engine internally. Plus here in VA, cannot even find a shop that will rebuild it, and I don't have time. I am putting in a long-block. This tractor is a keeper.

The PROBLEM is THEY want two serial numbers, the one off the intake manifold and the one off the injector pump. Intake was easy to find, as would have been the block (didn't want that one), but I cannot find the injector pump #. It is a rotary. CAV/Lucas? I know, I have replaced he pump throttle seals, and ordered the o-rings by year model and they fit.

Is the serial number not in sight? I cannot find one.

So where is the serial number? How do you find it?

Wayne,

That should be a CAV pump. Toward the rear/side of the pump body there is a metal tag riveted to the body (in open sight) with the pump model number, S/N, etc. Your's may be painted over or covered with dirt. The numbers are stamped into the metal tag.

Called over 20 business in Richmond, Norfolk, Lynchburg, Roanoak, Danville, Charlottlesville, and in short, either wouldn't, couldn't or wanted more than the shortblock. Did not find the hungry business guy who would let me know whatever, he could do it and cheaper, faster than anyone else. You would think, I agree there would be some business in VA who can do it. I need this tractor.

Short blocks are often cheaper than a shop rebuild. Given your symptoms its little wonder nobody will commit to a low ball rebuild price when crankshaft damage is all but certain. Be thankful they are being straightforward with you rather than being critical of shops that don't want to buy into a losing proposition. You want it fixed fast, put a short or long block in it and get it back in service.

I had already made the decision to go longblock. Very clearly stated at that in introduction. The question was about the serial number location on the injector pump.

I wanted to clearly state why you couldn't get a cheaper price on a shop rebuild."my engine is knocking badly" guarantees a worst-case estimate before disassembly. Best wishes.
