Ford 601 series tractor I think

Hello ... you have all helped me before. This time I am looking at a Ford tractor, red hood, grey grill, fenders and wheels. It is a diesel engine with, power steering, an SOS transmission and a PTO. It appears to be in very decent shape but no battery so I haven't heard it run, if it runs.

I cannot see any serial numbers on the left side behind the starter because the battery box extends way out over it. However on the other side in a similar position it is stamped with a "C" with the number 2782 under it. Appears to be hand stamped. What would that mean?

I think it is an 681 because of the diesel engine, SOS and PTO. Would that sound right?

I do not have a picture yet.

What would the approximate value be? if it runs and if it doesn't run.

Thanks in advance ... Norm43

Value?

A non running tractor is a parts tractor.

$500 - $750 from the available information.

The number is probably the SOS transmission rebuild number which if so makes the tractor a 1959. They had so many upgrades to the 59's that Ford did a transmission exchange program shipping all SOS transmissions back to Detroit and that number was stamped on to track it through the rebuild program.

That said the biggest issue to me is the 601's had a 144 diesel that I think is very hard to get parts for and the SOS is not for taking a chance on in a non-running machine.

It has come up here before as Bobrh says, that motor is very difficult to get parts for. That is a parts tractor.

Probably.

If running you can determine what else works as it should or does not.

I am not at all afraid of the S-O-S transmission but most are. I am, however, quite hesitant regarding the 6*1 series 144 CI diesel engine as parts are difficult to find.

Thanks for the comments and info. If the SOS had a rebuild I think that would be a plus. The tires are above average 12.4x28 on the rear and 40% tri rib on the front, all hold air. Rim's have minor rusting and are the loop style so they may have been replaced. The power steering is different than my 740 and 960. It has a larger reservoir with a small fill cap on the top. The lines go directly to the steering box. The sheet metal is all very good with original paint all around. I have access to another engine the same as this one, not that means much.

My thinking is that if it is a runner by just adding a battery then it would be in the $1500 - $2000.00 range. If not a runner then a lot less. Would $650 be a reasonable investment to get it home and find out if it will start and run? Its hard work but it should part out for much more than that.

I find it hard to pass up a potential bargain and have done well sometimes in the past but have been disappointed as well.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

650$ is reasonable. tires and scrap metal price will get that back for you if it's a pig in a poke.

yes. ag and rowcrop steering stup is different.
