No power to coil

Hello! I have a ford 860 tractor, and I was peacefully driving along on a nice fall day, and I look down to see my voltage meter going insane. So I look over and the stud in the alternator was loose and spinning around in the alternator creating a ton of sparks. So I turn the tractor off, and fix the stud, but when I try and start it again it will crank but not start. It sat for a while, but now I need it to plow the mile long driveway.

So I was testing with a test lamp, and there is no power getting to the coil, but there is power coming out of the solenoid and all its wires.

Then I tried to bypass the one fuse this tractors got, and still nothing. I am at a loss, any advice? Thanks in advance :D

Try a hot wire from the battery to the ignition side of the coil. If it starts that way you have a bad ignition switch of wiring from the coil back to the battery. Pretty simple circuit battery to switch and switch to coil and that is about it

Plus the ballast resistor which is usually a white ceramic critter 3/4" wide by a couple of inches long, with usually 2-3 terminals. Probably mounted up under the cowl somewhere. Power flows through it down to the primary of the coil. If it's ok, you can put your test lamp on one lead, get light and then the other and get light. If you do one and it works but not the other, it has opened up. What you need to know is what is the resistance. Probably 1.5 ohms for a 6 volt system and the purpose is to limit the current through the points to keep from burning them up.

Auto parts stores carry them sometimes.

since the alternator won't directly effect the ability to start, table the alt issue for now.

now. check the wire back from the coil to the switch, and then back from there with a test lamp. find where it looses power. could be bad switch. bad conenction at ammeter.. etc..
