Ford 4000 PTO brake (an external fix)

Here is a pic of my external PTO brake. It consists of an old circular
saw blade (teeth cut off), a pair of vise grips, and disc brake pads
off a car. Its crude but it does the job. Consequently, it provides a
way to slowly and barely move the PTO shaft to help it line up with
a driveshaft. I did this because everyone said the tractor had to be
broken apart to replace the brake but recently I saw a post on here
indicating it can be done from the top of the transmission. Can
anyone posts how-to pics on how to replace the PTO brake without
breaking the tractor apart? I would love to get more info on that so
I can fix this thing right.

Sorry, I had trouble getting the photo to load. Its only my second time posting.

Looks like you've got a 3 cylinder 4000. There were 2 different Independent PTO designs on those tractors.

If it has a Select-O-Speed transmission, then the PTO clutch is inside the transmission and there is no brake.

If it has a manual transmission then the PTO clutch and brake are inside the rear axle center housing and you should be able to access them by removing the hydraulic top cover. I think you'll have to slide the PTO shaft out the rear of the tractor a little to remove the brake.

Hi looks neat how you did it. I just kinda hope your not trying to hook a shaft on with the tractor running, when you say about slowly barely moving the pto shaft, your doing it by hand. If you aren't, it's very dangerous, as if something happens in the tractor just as the splines go on it will spit you out faster than you can let go of the shaft.
Not trying to be ignorant, just know of guys with a limb missing, or just the accident investigation reports, and a post mortem results to say why they aren't here any more. one guy I know didn't make it was a kinda 4 H leader who taught farm safety to the kids. Guess his it won't ever happen to me theory came to a very quick end!

No, I never have to touch the PTO when trying to move it. The vise grip pliers can have varying friction on the saw blade which acts like a disc brake rotor and the brake pads on the vise grips act like brake calipers. It's quite easy and safe to use without having to come close to the PTO. I would love for someone to post photos or step by step instructions on how to replace the PTO brake from the top. Everyone around my neck of the woods swears that the tractor must be disassembled to get to that brake. But folks here are promising that isn't the case. Any info on how to do that from the top of the transmission would be greatly appreciated.

As I said originally, if it has the Select-O-Speed transmission then the PTO clutch is inside thew transmission and it has no PTO brake, and the only thing you can adjust is the PTO cable.

If it has any transmission other than the S-O-S, then the PTO clutch and brake are inside the rear axle center housing, not the transmission, and it should be accessible by removing the hydraulic top cover, which is on top of the rear axle center housing, not from the top of the transmission.

Which transmission do you have?

It is the manual transmission. 8 speeds with the hi-lo range. Thank you.

Can anyone provide a photo looking down into the transmission with cover removed showing where the PTO brake can be accessed without splitting the tractor?

Why do you keep insisting on asking about how to get to the PTO clutch and brake through the transmission cover? Did you not understand my previous two posts? It is NOT in the transmission. It is in the rear axle center housing. You must remove the hydraulic top cover, not the transmission cover. All you will see if you open the transmission cover is gears and the shifter rails and forks.

Get yourself a I&T FO-31 service manual and it will tell you exactly how to get to the PTO clutch pack and how to service it.
