Ford 7000 Smoke Around Turbo

I have a 7000 recently purchased. It blows smoke from under the hood when the motor is loaded. Appears to be coming around the turbo housing, but not 100% certain. I've got it my head that this turbo has a gasket/packing around a portion of the housing that fails.....is this the case/problem with these turbos? Fairly certain this is the original turbo.

There is an exhaust leak at the seal between the turbo and exhaust pipe. If you decide to fix it, be prepared to sit down when they quote you the price for the seal. It is absurd.

I've already accepted that this will be big. My plan is to replace the turbo and exhaust manifold complete. Planning on $1200 for turbo and $300 for the manifold. Got a source for the turbo. Not sure where to get the manifold. Last few years aftermarket parts have got really bad on these old fords. Any one know good source for the manifold? Also...any other parts need replacing that I've overlooked?

I wouldn't think that it should be any big deal to fix as long as it's got a Schwitzer or Garrett style turbo. If it's got an old Rajay... that may get expensive.
With a garrett tho... should only be a base plate gasket or a pipe flange for the outlet. The outlet flange for the pipe should be easily obtainable from a truck parts supplier. The base gasket should be available from NH for not a lot of money..

Beware of aftermarket manifolds. There's ok ones and there are horrible ones. Always check the flange surfaces for flatness and all the sealing surfaces are parallel. I had 5 different ford 7000 manifolds that needed about an hour worth of rework each to make work. I sent them all back as unacceptable. Just so you know.

If you want to go with the newer style manifold and Garrett
turbo, I have a NOS manifold that I got with a bunch of other
parts. Would be glad to get it out of my shop for considerably
less than the $300 you mentioned. Would likely require new oil
lines to the turbo though.

If you go to a newer style 7600 manifold you will have to make some adjustments. The turbo gets flipped around, exhaust out the front, you'll have to cut a new hole in the hood. Intake in the rear, you'll need to bring the intake around to the back. Turbo to intake line won't be long enough, you'll have to either use the 7600 one or put a piece in yours. And of course the oil lines.

I'm working on a project 7000 right now at home, the 3LD schwitzer is locked up tight, not sure why, but I'm not going to worry about it. Someone gave me the complete manifold and turbo off a 4.4L JCB engine, nice little Garrett GT22. I'm working on making the adaptor right now to bolt it to the manifold, should really wake it up. Only challange I see is hooking the wastegate up.

My other option is to use a turbo off a 7700, but I enjoy a challange.

A year ago last summer I had a little oil leaking from the turbo of my 9000. last winter I pulled the tubing to check it out, and found that the wheel was nearly bound up. I sprayed WD-40 into the oil inlet while turning the wheel until it spun free. This last summer, no more leak, a lot more boost. Don't condemn the unit until you check it out.

I tried to turn the turbine side of the turbo with a breaker bar, its tight, the tractor had sat an unknown number of years and I believe that was the reason. I condemned this turbo when I couldn't turn it with a breaker bar. I'll knock the covers off evetually and see if I can get the center section apart and salvage anything.

Look up Michigan turbo in grand rapids Michigan had one done 4 years ago $3oo out the door total redo nice work.. I will look for number if needed. Superior turbo in Ottawa lake mi 49267 [734]854-6900 is good to for turbos and injection pumps. My 5000 pump redone $450 I like them both hope the info helps. Steve
