641 Problems

641's been working fine til today. I was using a new finish mower and it started acting like it was bogging down. It started lurching and lunging like it was about to run out of gas. It cut off a time or two then I heard a loud rattling noise. I checked and it was the fan hitting the guard. What has happened?

Fan hitting the guard I generally associate with water pump failure (on most vehicles where the two are intimately related) I don't know if the 641 is that way or not (I have 2 4500's and wouldn't know a 641 from an 801 without referring to pictures, asking questions etc. here - I just don't see that many other tractors in up-close and personal detail) - otherwise fan bearing failure with or without fan bearing mount failure...

...Makes a heck of a noise on a Corvair, and you know it's not the water pump there.

Fan hitting the shroud sounds like a water pump gone South.
Did you happen to notice the temperature on the temp gauge?

ditto what's been said.

problem could be bad water pump and overheating.

the 1st issue ain't bad as long as you got to it before it ate the rad usually.. however if you have let it overheat.. then.. could be bad.

Sounds like water pump, should be overheating and leaking water with that much play.

On a side note it must be well over 230-240 degrees F to be lurching and stumbling like its running out of fuel. I had my 641 up to 230*-240* and it never missed nor ran bad, I just turned it off cause I didnt think it should be running that hot.
