Stalling after starting????

I'm in need of a little troubleshooting help.
My '72 ford 5000 has recently started dying 10 to 15 seconds after starting. Initially it starts strong and sounds great....then it peters out like it's starving for fuel. Once it dies, I can crank it for 10 or 15 seconds and it will catch again and go. This motor has about 200 hours on a complete rebuild and has run perfect all summer.
When starting the tractor, I almost always use the fuel button on the side of the injector pump when starting cold.
The injector pump was rebuilt by a reputable shop less than two years ago.
I have not replaced the filter yet, but will this weekend.

Any thoughts?

Dave

Besides replacing the filter, I would also look inside the fuel tank to see if there's anything in there floating around that might be getting sucked into the pickup screen when the fuel is flowing.

on a diesel stalling.. i'd look somewhere at the fuel delivery system.

repalcing a filter is a great start. bleed it and then see what you get. make sure fuel flows free .

sounds like you have a simms pump?

have you checked cambox for oil.. and return lines?

Sounds like the excess fuel button that you're using for cold starting is not returning fully, I would try to pull the button out and see if that helps. What you describe is how our 7000 acts if the button doesn't pop all the way out, fire up sounds good then dies. Pull the button out all the way and it'll idle normally.

Thanks for the replies.....I will get to the filter this weekend.

I have not checked the cambox since I put the tractor back together, so I will do that this weekend also. No freezing as of yet but it's coming all next week. I use additive (Stanadyne or Seafoam) in my fuel if that's where you were thinking for gelling.
[b:0dd3e86528]MikeJM[/b:0dd3e86528]: I'm liking your idea a lot!.....in fact I fired up the tractor last night to feed and did not use the excess fuel button.....no stalling. So I will change my starting routine and exclude the button to see if this issue resolves itself.

Thanks as always! :D

Chances are there is no fuel return off the pump if it's a Simms or a minimec. They could be real buggers if air got in because they wouldn't purge out back to the tank. The later fords did get fuel returns on the inline pumps.
