Ford 340 fuel leak and manual(s) question

I have a 1979 Ford 340 that is leaking fuel. I believe it is from the injector pump, which I've temporarily dealt with by just turning off the petcock between the tank and injector. Now it is leaking from somewhere else, too. I haven't quite identified the new leak yet, but it's a lot more fluid coming out and it occurs even with the petcock turned off, so I think it's near the tank. Any ideas?

I don't have any manuals for this tractor right now. I'm looking at purchasing the service and operators manuals online, since they will help me with maintenance on the tractor. Do any of you think I need the parts manual, too?

Here's a link to the parts diagram for the fuel system for that model tractor:

Ford 340 diesel fuel system

As you can see from the parts diagram, the original fuel shutoff valve was on the fitting that was screwed directly into the bottom of the tank, and it had a screen up inside the tank on top of the shutoff valve. You say that you've got a petcock somewhere "between the tank and the injector", There are 3 injectors on that engine, one at each cylinder, so I assume that you mean between the tank and the injection pump, which sounds like someone has replaced the original shutoff valve somewhere along the way.

Since it is no longer the way it was when it left the factory, some pictures might help us to be able to help you.

Is the petcock between the tank and the filter, or between the filter and the injection pump?

A good way to find a leak is to clean everything real good with some "Gunk" or similar engine degreaser so you can see where the leak is originating from.

Thanks for the reply. That New Holland site with the parts manual is very helpful for figuring out what I'm looking at.

My fuel system is still as it was when it left the factory. I've identified the first leak as being in the injection pump. It's leaking from where the throttle control linkage bolts to the injection pump cover. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

The second leak must be coming from the fuel tank itself. Is it common for the tank to leak? It seems to be coming from the bottom of the tank, maybe from the seam where the two tank halves join together. Is that repairable or should I look for a new tank?

I can't figure out how to remove the cover over the fuel tank. Any trick to this? The steering shaft goes through this cover so I'm guessing I'll have to remove the steering wheel at some point. The parts diagram on the New Holland site is not as helpful on how to remove the cover.

Thanks again.
