Ford 960 Speed

Is the speed in low gear the same for a 860 and 960? Everything I have found says they are the same. The 960 axle drop boxes do have a reduction since the lower gear is larger. Does that mean the ring and pinions are different? Thanks

I think that it depends on the wheel and tire sizes on the two tractors, but I'm pretty sure that a stock 860 had 28" wheels and a stock 960 had 38" wheels, so I always thought that the final reduction on the row crops was to bring the rotational speed of the larger rear wheels down so that the ground speed matched that of the 8xx models.

No.

Both 8xx and 9xx tractors are equipped with 28" rims/tires.

The 9xx tractors used 6xx size differential assemblies with a different ring/pinion ratio to compensate for the final reductions.

(quoted from post at 21:18:40 10/30/14) So a 661 speed per given gear is the same as the 861. Some how I don't think so!!

When I was a kid the farmer that I worked for had an 801 with loader and Elenco, and a bare 960. He had two sons, both a little younger than I. When we would transport from one farm to another you know that there was some road racing going on. The 960 would always beat the 801 but not by a lot. The 8N, of course would leave the other two way behind.

Showcrop,

How is an 8N faster than a 960?
From what I remember they weren't all that fast, unless it had an add-on transmission with a high range gear.

Of course, I used to rig a wire to the throttle linkage to override the governor, and that thing would FLY!

No, it had no auxiliary, just the four speed, but it was easily faster than the other two. At the time it had a nearly bald tire on the right, too

Must just be the oldtimer's disease setting in, because my 961 seems light years faster than what I remember of the 8N. That was many years ago!
