This tractor is a bearcat to steer when its cold, after warming it steers normally, is this the nature of the tractor? Also were these tractors equipped with glow plugs?

Be sure to keep the spindles greased and also check the thrust bearing on the bottom of the spindle for failure. The bearing is cheap and easy to replace. And if there is a gap between the steering arm and top of axle housing, you probably have a collapsed bearing. This will cause drag on the steering effort of the pump. I have replace a couple on the tw series with great results on the steering.

There is a filter inside the power steering reservoir that might be choked up and when the oil is cold it wont flow as good as when it warms up. You just have to pull the pot off the pump to change it.

They do not have a glow plug or heater. They do have a cold start button on the side of the injection pump that helps with starting. It is located in the center of the arm that the kill cable hooks to. Push the killer in and open the throttle and push the button in and then crank. Once it starts pull the throttle back and it resets.

You're right - the Thermostart isn't listed as either standard or optional for the 86/9600 in my sales literature. An ether start aid was available, though.
Some had the reservoir (and filter) on the pump, but earlier ones had the remote reservoir. If I remember right, you take the lid off the reservoir to change the filter on those.

I know that I have seen one, probably mine before I got it, with a factory ether system on it. There is a 1/8 npt hole in the intake manifold that I assume it threads into. I have to use ether on mine below 40 degrees, and it doesn't knock with it, just makes it sound like a Cat for a few seconds.
