Ford 2000 power steering

I bought a 2000 3 cyl. gas tractor with bad power steering. After servicing the system, it pukes up the fluid around the steering column. Bad seal. It has up & down movement in the column, unscrews 1 1/2 turns on the wheel before any tire movement. Got IT manual and started into it. I have the upper column off and bad seal removed. thrust bearing does nothing with the column scewing up and down, got any ideas on how to fix this up and down stuff before further tear-down?
All help is appreciated.

I would guess the nut on your shaft has unscrewed.
Is it tight? If so it's a simple fix.
The manual will show how to take a punch and stake
the nut so it doesn't happen again.
By the way, I wouldn't just replace the upper seal.
The lower seal should also be renewed while you are
in there.

Thanks for the reply. I'm past the staked nut being loose. It was not tight, but still staked in place that has all been removed and cleaned. I'm going to take valve assy. all off the tractor in the morning. I'm really curious to see how the worm assembly stays in place. The manual does not show me how the this is done.
I just need to dig further.
Do you know of a good parts supplier for seals, bearings, ect?
Thanks

Found the problem with steering. After removing valve assembly I got to the adapter housing and found the thrust bearing had been broken and ground up badly. This going to require taking the entire steering down to the bare case, as there were no roller bearings remaining in the cage on lower bearing assembly. Now I know why I got the tractor so cheap!
