Ford 4000 (4 cyl) Fuel Shutoff

1964 4000 4 cyl gas. On about the fifth fuel shutoff, but they always start leaking or letting fuel through. I have had carb rebuilt twice, and needle seals for a while, then allows fuel into carb and eventually into cylinders.

Just wondering how others deal with this?

Thanks!

on a 950 i have i just pulled the tap off as it was leaking, cleaned it good in carb cleaner, i then put a new stem oring in it then gave it a abundant dose of epoxy to the threads and screwed it intot he body in the full on position and let it setup.

i added a compression fitting and short stem out the fuel outlet and put in a brass valve.

works like a charm..

Lever type valve? If so, I know of no viable way to rebuild one.

I simply replace the valve. I've done it so often that I can do it in about 30 minutes.

The carburetor should NOT allow fuel past the needle/seat if all is well. Are both strainers in place and in good condition?

Stay away from fuel additives, e.g., Sta-Bil, etc.

I see lots of posts on here about leaking cut off valves and have had the same problems myself. I now have a 640 that I bought several years ago. It has a plastic ball valve located in the fuel line. It works great. I have had it several years.

You can pretty much depend on the lever type leaking pretty much straight out of the box. You can use the older screw type.

I used to fight with them, but now, if they don't leak externally, I just add a brass shutoff to the line somewhere.
.....in an easier to reach spot too.

shutoff valve on the gasline, a drain valve on the carb bowl,
and a wingnut on the battery ground cable.
30 seconds, and when I walk away, they are just a dead pile of metal.

Thanks Guys! I just did not want to miss some recent aftermarket part or something...

I think I will go the additional shutoff route now. My current valve does not leak externally, so I hope this will get me going for a while.
I have several of these "valves" in my junk pile in my garage that have failed over the years. I may try the rebuild on one of these - Cheap enough sounds like.

NNP -> Mine too randomly runs down a battery. Nothing I can consistently reproduce, so I am going to do the wingnut/battery cable thing...Great idea!

Dean -> I have rebuilt this carb (M/S) twice myself, and let a local shop do it the last time. Problem is this tractor will sit for a month at a time, and enough gas will leak thru to make it difficult to crank, then gas-smoke just billows when it does fire off. Screens are new. I just write it off...lol I still LOVE this old Beast....Does all I ask of it when it runs...
