881 questions??

I am getting ready to attack my "new" 881 & I have some questions. I bought it needing an overhaul & w/broken "ears" where the front end mounts to the front of the block, so I plan to use the good inner parts to rebuild a left over 1957 960 block. So my questions:
1. What surprises (differences) can I expect between the 1959 801 block & the 1957 900 one?
2. How much of the tranny/rear end do I need to drain to pull the block, & which ones are the drains?
3. What is the best manual for the 801 series including the SOS?
As usual, thanks for any help!

An 801 and a 900 have the same block provided the 801 was built before 1961.The difference will be the exhaust/intake manifold, carburetor, air intake system and exhaust system. These differences are all on the left side of the engine but will interchange as a whole. You will need to drain the hydraulic system because of pump and pump manifold removal. The orginal Ford shop manual, which is still repoduced and available several places, here too, will include the SOS as well.

1. I'm not sure
2.Maybe the center housing (hydraulics) should have pipe plug under the middle of it
3. The Ford shop manual for *00 and *01 series . . . unless your transmission has been replaced with the "blue" transmission. If has you'll also need the SOS supplement manual

Thanks for the help. Pulling the engine & beginning the swap begins today!
Question #2 was because the first time I split a *00 series I lost 5 gallons of hydraulic all over the floor because I drained the wrong plug!
