plug won't spark

Got the 841 home. Won't fire on plug nearest the instrument panel (#3?). New distributor cap. New plug wire. New plug. Still no fire. What is wrong gentlemen?

841 would be a four cylinder, the aft most plug would be #4.
I take it since you didn't mention the other cylinders that they
are firing correctly?
Is there any side-to-side play/wobble in your distributor shaft?
Do you have the little metal clip under the rotor?
That's about all that comes to mind at the moment! LOL

Not withstanding that I think maybee you are confused about which tractor you have, if all your other plugs spark except a single one, then depending on how you tested this, there could be different answers. If you pulled the plug and see no spark, check wire, and plug by swapping in a spare and see if it sparks, if u did this and nada, pull cap and check out the inner contact for the arc from the rotor, we have all seen bad caps and broken bits

Maybe your confused about my question. I already did all the things you mentioned as I said in my post. I also know that the tractor has an 841 stamped in the transmission. Never-the-less, I appreciate your trying to help me.
I have read the archives and find this to be a somewhat common problem with these tractors. My instincts are telling me the distributor is worn.
More $$$$

okay,, help me a bit..

it wont fire.. is that with a the plug out of the engine and grounded or do you mean that cyl does not fire due to low compression or stuck valve?

If it wont fire testing the wire from the dist cap,, and the others are... then....

could be the number 4 lobe is worn down on the dist shaft.. very rare.

could be a bad rotor

could be a bad cap, cracked or carbon trails, or moisture in cap

could be a bad wire

could be a bad plug... if your using a plug as a tester.

could be weak spark as that is your longest wire... due to bad contacts on coil, points or dist or bad coil, bad ballast resistor, bad ignition switch with high resistance (very common)

you'd likely benefit from going back and re-reading my post as well as the others here.

Since you decided to be a smart alec, i'll no longer ever reply to a post of yours.

PS. cyl nearest the dash on a 4 cyl tractor is #4, not #3

good luck with that 3 cyl 4 cyl tractor.

I was willing to help you.. but you kinda sound like you don't want it with your opening line in your post.

(quoted from post at 20:35:47 10/27/14) Got the 841 home. Won't fire on plug nearest the instrument panel (#3?). New distributor cap. New plug wire. New plug. Still no fire. What is wrong gentlemen?

If it is an 841, then the cylinders are numbered 1-2-3-4 from the front of the engine to the rear, so the rearmost cylinder near the instrument panel would be the number 4 cylinder. The firing order, on the other hand, is 1-2-4-3. So maybe your confusion about the rearmost cylinder being the number 3 cylinder has come about because you have the cylinder numbering confused with the firing order.

As other folks have asked... How are you testing such that you have determined that one particular cylinder is "not firing"?

I love how people see themselves and others on here. "smart alec" ? lol. That's a good one. I'm sorry I hurt your feelings. I didn't mean to. I try not to be an obnoxious @$$ as some on here are. But I guess I am. Your right. It's no. 4 cyl.
