Question to the restorers

Since I got the 3000 and its been a work horse giving me no troubles I will continue to use that while I get my 641 running again. But I wanted to ask about "restoration".

Question I have is about soda blasting. Has anyone soda blasted paint off of one of their tractors before?

I am wanting to do this cause I could leave the tractor complete for the most part and strip the paint off without major disassembly. Reason I am wanting to do this is where I bought the tractor from it appears they slathered the paint on with a brush and theres these foam bubbles in the paint in some areas and I just cant deal with spraying new paint on it without correcting those issues. It also will allow me to get the serial number off the transmission and have it visable.

I would not even consider restoring a tractor that didn't run right.
I sand blast parts of mine, but not the whole tractor.
There are too many places that the media WILL get into and
destroy seals, etc. If you tear it all apart and blast the parts
separately, that would work, but that's a lot of work.
Then again, that would be what I would call a "restoration".

This will be done after I get it running right. What I planned on doing was removing the alternator, water pump (going to replace it) the sheet metal hood fuel tank, instrument cluster, and the fenders. The wheels would also be removed as well. Then I planned on soda blasting the chassis for the most part. I figured it wouldnt be as bad as actually sand blasting since the soda cleans up via water and is not a harsh media. it wont hurt glass or bright trim but will remove paint.

As of now I already got a master overhaul kit coming in for the carb from here and I have the carb off and will be overhauling it when the kit comes in. I think thats the biggest problem cause it will start up and run just fine when cold but by time it hits 140 degrees the engine starts to lose power and diesels till it stalls. Pull the air hose to carb off and fuel just pours out, so hopefully this will correct all issues, if not I have the shop manual and parts manual that came in the mail yesterday that will help me out.

I have heard of a number of situations where media blasting ruined seals. Soda is probably less aggressive than sand or black beauty, but I expect that seals can still be damaged by soda bouncing off other surfaces, and in some places won't wash out adequately. Knowing that you can't clean a tire by media blasting because it just bounces off, I have thought that one could block media access to any openings or seals with RTV silicone, since the media will just bounce off. Just an idea.
