Removing transmission shifter plate on an 851

Hello everyone. I am retarted. I have a 62 Ford 851. Today I broke the starter switch trying to remove it. To get to the jist of things....how do you remove the the top shifter plate? I got all of the bolts loose and even disconnected the choke but with my FO-20 manual I could not get the shifter plate disengaged. Are there any tricks that I am missing to get the shifter disengaged? I hate to sound stupid but I am afraid of breaking something. Thank you all in advance for sharing your wisdom.

I'm more of a 3 cylinder man so haven't done it myself. But I'm pretty sure you have to remove the bolt on the top of the shifter handle and remove the handle first.
Not sure what all that entails but start with the bolt and see.
Others here will add on or correct this if I'm wrong.

That is right.
It's been a while since I've had to do that, but if I remember t, there is a key and a spring that come out when you pull the shifter off. Don't let them go flying and get lost.

The shift handle and the shaft it fits onto are both tapered so after removing the nut on top of the shifter you have to pry it up to break the "seal" between the two tapers. And that's when you have to watch for the flying spring and woodruff key.

Thanks guys. That's what I tried doing at first and it wasn't coming loose easy. I even tried using a puller. I was just scared of breaking it and the manual really doesn't give much help.

Loosen the retainer nut a few turns.

Hold a big heavy hammer on one side of the shifter hub and then strike it on the other side with another smaller hammer. Strike it just below the nut. When it comes loose then take the nut off and remove the shifter lever etc.
