I have been working on a Ford 600 that has a transplanted industrial engine. The tractor has been tuned up and starts and runs great. It pulls hard and will do anything you ask of it. However, it will run on when the key is turned off and you need to let the clutch out to stop the engine. New plugs, points, etc., timing is correct. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Stock electrics? Do this even if you only run it for 15 seconds before turning off?

If it has an alternator you will need to put a diode in the circuit to stop the running on when you turn off the switch. When it's running after you turn the switch off, pull one of the battery cables off to verify this,if it stops you need a diode.

it's doubtfull that it is an alt/ feedback problem, as it would run just like normal, and letting out the clutch would just drive him along like normal.

he needs to check plug heat range, re check timing, and make sure he idles down before turning it off.

Like Mike says, I'll bet there is and alternator that is not properly wired. But have often wandered how timing has anything to do with this situation!

Run on as in dieseling?? If yes you are likely to have carbon build up in the engine causing hot spots which will cause that. Add say a quart of ATF to 3 gal of gas and run it

Is he dropping to flat idle and giving it a chance to cool before shutdown?

running on.....
I'd go thru everything again. list is endless
too rich...carbon build-up that will glow
too lean, too hot a plug, too much advance, all will make a plug a glowplug when you shut down.
another common one is timing too retarded, exhaust valve gets hot and with retarded timing, you will have to adjust the throttle plate open a bit more to get it to idle properly..then at shutdown with the plate open a bit and a glowing exhaust valve...run-on
