Will This Work? Wiring a 12 Volt Conversion.

I have been running the #1 exciter wirer (Delco S-10) with a diode to the switched terminal from the ignition switch. The same terminal that goes to the + side at the coil. My question is, I have been told no need to go all the way back to the dash, just run the exciting wire around the front of engine to the +-side if the coil and it will work the same way. Any-thing to be concerned about doing it that way?

I hook that excite wire to the coil on almost all the tractors I switch over to 12 volts and have yet to have any problems

6 one way half a dozen the other as long as you use the one way diode in the wire between coil and alternator.

...and I suppose that all here have assumed no resistor between key sw & coil, as well?
