My Ford 600 has been running rough so I started with the plugs. Ended up replacing plugs, leads, condensor, and points. After this, tractor has no spark.

If I break the points openI get no spark or a very weak one. Touching the distributor shaft I get a strong spark. I also cleaned the connections coming out of the coil. I don't understand why there would be no spark at the points. Just for kicks, I put the original condensor and points back in and had the same problem.

Any ideas?

clean points ( don't sand or file ).. ( either set ), then hotwire from battery to coil, replace wire from oil to dizzy.

check again.

I've always cleaned the points with very fine sandpaper (800 or 1000 grit), is this too rough? If so, what do you use?

I'll try the wires tomorrow and let you know. Thanks.

(quoted from post at 02:53:43 10/24/14) Can you tell what touching the distributor shaft means.

Good spark when I take a screwdriver and jump between the arm of the points to the shaft for the rotor. Just no spark between the points.

The insulator that goes through the side of the distributor is a
fairly common failure point. It can cause intermittent trouble.
You could check for voltage at the points while wiggling that
connection to see if the voltage goes away or temporarily take
it out and run a wire through the hole to connect the points to
the coil and see if that fixes it.

You can jump the arm of the points (hot side) to the shaft for the rotor (good ground) and get a spark.
But if you touch the arm of the points (hot side) to the other points contact (ground) you get no spark.

So what does this tell you?????

Yes your power is not finding ground.

You are loosing your ground somewhere between where the distributor mounts in the engine and where the points mount to the breaker plate.

This could be something as simple as the point contacts not making good contact to other problems deep in the distributor.

Best way to find it. Take the hot wire off the points and move it out of the way. Now with a ohm meter with one lead on a good ground start at the points and keep digging to you find ground.

he problem that john in la has identified for you, has sometimes been found to be rust between breaker plate & distributor body & broken or loose mounting screws (@) in said plate.

Guys have you covered with using your ohm meter to follow the ground path.
If your ground test and power test show ok right up to the points arms.....get physical with them.
Had the same no points spark issue once even after sanding them and blowing them clean.
(ya, I know, not supposed to but...no new parts ya know)
So, ala 36 coupe, I got physical with them. Took out my pocketknife and scraped them hard enough to scratch the pad surface.
Fired up immediately, and drove it to the shop and threw those junk points in the trash.

cleAN OR sand the points contacts.. the china points are junk, junk, junk...

reread your post.. the flexable ground jumper is gone from the dist plate..
