1970 3400 gasoline. Water pump bearing failed, new
pump on it's way from this site. Pump came off
clean and easy. When I install the new pump,
should I coat the bolts that go into the
block/water jacket with any special sealer? Any
other hints that might help? As usual, your advice
is appreciated.

I have never had to coat the bolts with anything in the 50 or so water pumps I have replaced. If you coat them, it will be very difficult to get them out next time.

There are a few rare cases where the bolt hole has leaked due to other problems and you will only need the coat them in that case.

Most of the time its where a bolt hole is wallowed out or a blind hole got punched through, or a crack in a housing, that causes a leak. So, only if you have an unusual situation.

Clean gasket surfaces well, and coat gasket with a very light coat of felpro and install.

Thanks for the reply. I checked the block and found that the bolts do not go into the water jacket. Cleaned the threads with a tap, wire brushed the bolts. I used some grease to hold the gaskets and a small amount of anti-seize on the bolts. No runs, no drips, no errors. Back to the field. Thanks again. I learn something every day here.
