851 Upgrade to 12V system?

Curious if anyone has purchased and installed the 12volt conversion kit they offer on this site and others – it’s $133.00. and includes the alternator, brackets and wiring harness. Says you should buy a new 12V coil and that you can trash your voltage regulator…etc. I have also considered trying out the Electronic Ignition too. I’m not too clear on positive ground vs negative ground? But it seems the literature supports a hassle-free ignition.

ground is defined as what post of your battery is tied to hassis.

many have bought the conversion kit here.

it's good for those that can't fabricate their own brackets and wire harness and don't know what alt will work. If you fit any of those. go for it. bring your own 12v battery and hookup with ground to match the alt ( most are negative ). i reccomend a napa ic14sb coil. it is about 16$ depending on where you live.. and needs no resistor to run on 12v.

once you get her converted to 12v and running on your points system, then if you decide to go ei.. that's your call. i do not suggest doing both conversions at once, or at least do not install both at the same time.. do the 12v conv first and make her run with that.. then do the ei on a running trartor.

it's really a good idea unless you really know auto electrics. saves you from troubleshooting a power distribution system, and an ignition system at the same time.

can't get any electrons out of the EI if none are going in.

post back if you hit any snags
