850 hydraulic adjustment

So I got my new manuals last night after work. After admiring the fresh shiny new books for a minute I opened the shop manual up to the hydraulic section. I need to replace my cam pin and then re adjust everything and get it back together. Its been apart for a couple of weeks so I'm a bit antsy about it. The very first thing the manual tells me to do is to place a tool on the top cover. I don't have this tool. Is there a way around this? Is the tool that ZANE sells for the 8N what I need? I don't remember the tool name, I only glanced at the book for just a minute, but I'm sure you guys know what I'm talking about. Thanks

It's unlikely you will find the special tool.
They are made of unobtainium.
The I&T manual gives a very good description for a work around if you don't have the tool.
Take a hint from John Muir - sit down and read the manuals from cover to cover. You wont remember it all but you will remember where to find stuff in it.
Then reread the part about adjusting your top cover linkage.
You will go into the job with a greater understanding of what you are about to do.
With that understanding will come greater confidence.

Thanks, I admittedly didn't read much. It was late when I got home last night and I just glanced at the hyd section. I'll read over it in the next few days. I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't a tool that I would have to have before I got started. Guess I probably would have gotten the answer on my own if I had read a little more. Thanks again for all the help you guys give, maybe one day I will be able to pass it on, and hope to do so with the patience you guys show.

After replacing the cam follower pin and any other parts that are badly worn, follow the "alternative procedures" (no special tools needed) in the I & T FO-20 manual.

Take your time and follow the procedures precisely.

It will be close to specification if you do it properly.
