The FWA on my 8240 is spring on power off. It will intermittently engage on its own with the switch still in the off position. Whenever I check for power at the connection on the side of the trans I get power is there. One time I could hear what sounded like a solenoid valve chattering inside the case while I manipulated the connector. If I break and make the connector it will behave for a little while. I finally bypassed the connector and it did not engage until I had been mowing for two hours, but then it engaged on its own again. I checked the switch and it worked properly. The parts page shows a relay in the fuse box but my unit does not have it, and has not. Any ideas?

High resistance in the solenoid coil? Intermittent
open in one of the conductors between the solenoid
coil and the bypassed connector? Dirty connection
between switch and solenoid?

I would suspect a broken wire in the connector at the solenoid. I think that one is the same as the later TS models... I had mine break internally at the back of the plug. See if you can get a new pigtail for it and crimp it on. Your parts guy is probably going to have to do some serious digging in the system to find one... and might try to sell you an entire extension harness first. Just get the pigtail...
I'm not saying it isn't the solenoid either... but if it is I think you can swap the FWD and Diff lock solenoids... so mabey try that and see what happens.

Rod, you still have to remove that side cover that is behind all of the tubes to replace the pig tail, right?

I'm not sure on that one. I'm more familiar with the TS chassis than the 40... mine is right out in the open. Yours is buried up under the platform?

The control module which incorporates all the solenoid valves is on the back side of a plate which is held onto the right side behind the tire, held on with about a dozen bolts.

Ahh. My TS has the FWD solenoid on the side of the transmission... The PTO and diff lock are up higher near the axle... and a pain to reach.
