Ford 5000 crankshaft balancer

2 questions. I have a 1971 Ford 5000 diesel how do I know if it is a 233 or 256? Second I lost 6 teeth on the crankshaft balancer itself found the pieces in the oil pan. How do I time the new one I have coming? I could not replace the one gear had to buy the whole assembly but don't know where it should be set when I bolt it up to the crank? TDC on engine then just bolt on? Help please.
 
That's a mid production 5000, unless someone has changed the engine it should be a 256. You could measure the bore from underneath while you have it apart, should have a 4.4" bore.

I vaguely remember doing my buddy's 268 when we worked on his engine, so I had to refer to the book.
How is the crankshaft gear? Did that make it out ok? There is a hard to see mark on one side of the gear, I don't remember which side, according to the book it should be visiable when #2 piston is TDC. There is a corrosponding mark on mating balancer gear, line the marks up of course.
 
I had my 256 rebuilt, ran a couple of hours and the balancer bearings went out & wiped the teeth on the crank too. When they put the cam bearings in the one bearing has 2 holes in it, the second hole feeds the oil the the balancer- they put the bearing in wrong

Site seems to be wonky but thanks for the reply. crankshaft gear is fine will look for marks on #2.. Everything else seems to be done off #1 tdc so good to know.
