Ford 4000 select a speed

I am looking at a Ford 4000 with select a speed. Can a standard transmission be installed to replace the select a speed?

Yes...if you get all the right parts. Which 4000 is it - the '62-'64
4-cylinder or '65-'75 3-cylinder? That will make a big difference
in what is needed for the swap. For the later ones, the easiest
way is swap rear ends alomg with the transmission.

What is wrong with the Select-OOOO-Speed? Many of us here have them and get a lot of trouble free use out of them.

Ditto on what showcrop said. If I bought a Ford of that vintage without a Select-O-Speed, I'd be asking if one could be swapped in - rather than out!

(quoted from post at 05:39:40 09/30/14) Sorry I am new to the forum and replied to the wrong one. Range 5-8 won't engage.

As has been said, we need to know whether you're looking at a 63 -64 4cylinder model or a 65 up 3 cylinder model.

However, the common repair for a 5 -8 loss is one of the least expensive repairs you'll make to an SOS. It's a tiny steel pin the sequencing valve. It's broken or dropped out and needs to be replaced. If you or your mechanic knows what to do, it should come in as less than a 100 dollar repair.

if you state where you are someone here may be able to recommend an SOS expert in you area. There are quite a few around.

I live near Frankfort,IN which is near Lafayette. Is there anywhere that the process is detailed. I have some experience as I removed a engine and did brakes on an 8N.

Page 68 of section 8 of the Ford service manual for the '65 and up thousand series. I'm not familiar with these later transmissions. My experience has been on the early 000 and 01 series where the timing valve is pinned to the number 3 servo with the little pin I mentioned previously.

It appears as though the later 000 series has 2 timing valves in the 2,3 servo cover. Neither appears to be pinned to a servo.

Sorry for the threadjack.. 5000 SOS runs good, bad tranny, $1600

Which way do I run?

Depends on what's wrong with the transmission! You may actually want to run toward it! Is it a diesel engine or gasoline?
