840 Rockshaft crack? Photo attached

Well, its not the rockshaft, but I didn't know what else to call it. During disassembly I saw this mark. Can't imagine how it could have become cracked. Might it be a casting mark? Anyone else seen this?

What would you do?

Thanks in advance.

I discovered a similar but more noticeable crack in the ram arm of my 860 when I replaced the rock shaft bushings about 5 years ago.

I took the ram arm to a good local welder (I'm no welder) who ground a V in it and welded it.

The crack is on the compression side of the arm and not subject to extension forces. I would have replaced it had it been.

All seems well 5 years later.

Interesting. Do you know if the part is cast iron or cast steel?

I wonder how the crack got there.... doesn't seem to me like there is any way to apply pressure in a way that would cause a crack there.

The ram arm is cast steel.

I, too, wondered why it cracked on the compression side, but apparently, such cracks are not uncommon.

I doubt that my arm, let alone yours, would have failed without welding, but I'm a perfectionist and had mine welded.
